Gyan mudra helps in mental concentration. We can feel the beating of pulse, when we touch the index finger with the thumb. If we concentrate on this, our mind stops wandering and we can attain a very high state of concentration.
Gyan mudra is a boon for students. It helps to increase the memory and sharpness intelligence. Unnecessary snapping of fingers, swaying of legs or other such wrong habits of the limbs here and there without any reason has an adverse effect on our brain and muscles. Our energy is wasted. Memory power is reduced. Acharya Keshav Deo writes that some students who were very intelligent & sharp and could remember a lesson after just one reading were purposely taught to use their hands in wrong way. As a result their I.Q. level came down. Level of intelligence, memory & mental efficiency was found to be lower than before. When they practiced Gyan Mudra regularly their brain power returned to normal.
If mentally retarded children are given practice of this Mudra some change in their mental power can be seen after some time of practice. Thumb is the center of intelligence. The part of thumb we press in this Mudra by the index finger mark the centers of pituitary and pineal endocrine glands. The pressure on these centers activates the two glands situated in our brains. Malfunctioning of pituitary glands may result in making children angry. Children do mischief they like to talk lies like to steal but a prolonged practiced of Gyan Mudra result in mental and physical progress of children, child becomes free from bad habits and a through change can be observed in his/ her behavior.
Gyan Mudra not only makes our memory powerful and sharpens our brain but also helps us in getting ‘Divya Drishti’. Regular practiced of Gyan mudra helps Sadhak in opening Gyan Netra or Shiv Netra. Development of Sixth Sence is possible by this Mudra. With the help of Divya Chakshu of after it is opened, Sadhak can see any happenings of the past, present or future and he can understand the happenings in other person mind.
Sleeplessness can be cured by the regular practiced of Gyan Mudra, mental tension, also working pressure etc. affect badly on the health of our brain and we suffer from sleeplessness. Gyan Mudra works like a sleeping pill or ‘Yogic Tranquilizer’ in such cases. It is proven that practice of Gyan Mudra cures the chronic problem of sleeplessness within 3 days. Acharya Keshav Deo says,” many patients were suffering from sleeping pills with hardly any favorable effects. Gyan Mudra practice gave wonderful results to them. They experienced natural sleep and there was no need to take sleeping pills any more. If Gyan Mudra does not cure sleeplessness completely then combination of Gyan Mudra with Pran Mudra is advisable”

Dear,
I am glad I found this post on GYAN MUDRA. I am 55 years and since 1996 (!) I am wrestling with severe chronic tension and tightness pain in my chest and breathing problems (CHV?), due to unresolved emotional issues (anxiety, panic, HSP, OCD, perfectionism, low self esteem, trauma, broken heart?). I have tried lots of therapy, regular and alternative, without finding any relief. I also have been reading very widely (too much?) on different spiritual traditions, psychology, philosophy and all kinds of therapy. I almost cannot relax, due to permanent high activation of the amygdala/sympathic nervous system... and extremely high sensitivity. The pain can be very severe and I can't breathe in fully because of a symbolic traumatic knife inside me from the back of my head to the neck, shoulders, chest, diaphragm. My drunk father spoke out a curse against me in 1996 after my divorce in 1994. An Indian ayurvedic therapist once diagnosed too much yang, too high vata (air) resulting in breathing disorder and heavy chest pain. But although I tried to find the root cause of all this (undoubtedly too mentally), I couldn't understand what it exactly is. I have probably chosen this event to evolve spiritually in this incarnation, but the price is so high! I guess it is an accumulation of traumatic events in a high sensitive person The armour around my heart is there since a very long time and there is this awful feeling that my heart (chakra) is closed and I am not able to accept or give love, although most people like me and don't understand it. I am aware I have unconsciously constructed all this in order to protect myself (ego defensive mechanism) but I don't succeed thus far to let it go. I keep wondering also wether medication (which I take since years), since it suppresses lots of things, can be an impediment for my inner child work and spiritual growth. Although I don't take much (1 mg alprazolam), I know how addictive this medication is! But on the other Kim Nataraja of the Christian meditation movement told me that it is not an obstacle spiritually since the spirit in me is always pure. Since I have all this debilitating pain (long use of medication makes symptoms even worse!), I am also always very doubtful in my mind about what I have to do. And then I keep asking myself whether I have to search for still another therapy or what specific kind of meditation can do the trick. I was among many other approaches for some time intohttp://www.traumahealing.com/somatic-experiencing/peter-levine.html) and I found also http://traumaprevention.com/ But there are so many different therapies over there! It feels like I am holding on to things, straining and sabotaging myself, not being able to let go, stepping on the gas (lucky I have a very strong and healthy physical body), perfectionistic and so forth. I am such a driven and passionate person, a painter/artist with lots of energy, which is however not good directed. When I learn something new, as recently EFT, JSJ or Qigong, I would practise too much every day, attempting to get rid of the pain, which is not a proper attitude of acceptance. I read Tara Brach http://www.tarabrach.com/articles/trauma.html and I am always struggling with following (either/or or both/and?) issue. On the one hand I believe mindfulness meditation can relief trauma, emotional pain by learning to be with what is now, on the other hand healing modalities such as fe EFT or Law of attraction and other New Age stuff, although you say the sentence 'although I feel this..., I accept myself as I am', there seems to always be the tendency to fix things (see all the videos on so many issues).
I need SIMPLICITY, RELAXATION above anything and I like mudra work because of it's simplicity. I think/feel that this GYAN mudra and also APANVAYU mudra can help me a great deal! Do you think of other mudra's for my condition?
Love,
